E-bikes market comes into the limelight now.
It attracts old and middle age in particular while a price is not low at all, but what is the popular secret?
I investigated the popular secret of the e-bikes this time.
Why e-bikes gain popularity among middle-aged and older men?
Recently, there has been an increasing number of middle-aged and elderly men pedaling on their e-bikes among other sports bikes at "Biwa-ichi," a route where cyclists can circle the lake.
Because even the old and middle age that declined of the physical strength can cycle while enjoying scenery
Lake Biwa is said to be a cycling mecca."Although I had given up on going up the hilly roads due to a loss of strength, I was able to cycle and enjoy the scenery just like everybody else," states a man in his 50s from Osaka who enjoyed cycling the Biwa-ichi on his e-bike.
Difference between e-bike and bicycle
E-bikes are electric assisted sports bike-style bicycles, with batteries and electric units equipped onto road bikes and mountain bikes.
In Europe and the US, e-bikes have gained popularity due to an increase in health awareness, and e-bike specialist conventions are even being held.
In 2015, Yamaha and others entered the market, and bicycle manufacturers dealing in e-bikes are increasing one after another.
Asahi opened an e-bike specialist shop in Kyoto City
In October, bicycle industry leader Asahi opened an e-bike specialist shop in Kyoto City.
They have a lineup of the approximately 30 types of e-bikes sold in Japan, and also allow customers to gain firsthand experience through test riding the bicycles.
"This year is the beginning of the e-bike era in Japan," stated Asahi buyer Oh Minsu.
The use of electric assisted bicycles is very common among women, who use them for shopping or to drop off and pick up children.
Recently though, there has been an increase in the number of middle-aged and older men riding "e-bikes," which are a combination of sports bikes and electric assisted bicycles.
Although e-bikes are priced at 200,000 yen, they are capturing the demand of the middle and old aged who want to enjoy sports bikes in a simple fashion.
Bicycle manufacturers have also increased their product lineups, with specialist shops entering the market in October.
This market expansion is showing a fast-moving trend.
